Chief AI Officer job description: an editable template
A Chief AI Officer job description should define the mandate, budget authority and business outcomes before listing technical skills. Paul Okhrem's template helps a company scope its first AI executive role. It is a hiring document, not an open vacancy. If the mandate is ongoing but part-time, compare a fractional Chief AI Officer before starting a full-time search.
Define the role before starting the search
Decide whether the company needs an executive to own AI investment and governance, a head of AI to lead a delivery team, or a specialist engineer. Combining every job into one description makes expectations hard to meet.
For context, IBM's 2026 CEO study reports a CAIO at 76% of surveyed organizations. That sample finding does not mean every company needs the role.

Role summary
The Chief AI Officer owns the company's AI strategy, governance and value measurement. In this template, the CAIO reports to the CEO and works with the executive team. Change that reporting line if your operating model assigns the mandate differently.
Responsibilities
- Set the AI strategy and maintain a prioritized portfolio tied to business goals.
- Own the approved AI budget and recommend when to fund, change or stop an initiative.
- Establish governance with a system inventory, risk reviews, decision rights and operating controls.
- Lead build-versus-buy and vendor decisions with technical, procurement and risk teams.
- Define the AI operating model, delivery responsibilities and hiring priorities.
- Measure benefits against agreed baselines, including operating costs and human review.
- Report progress, spending, material risks and decisions to the CEO and board.
- Coordinate regulatory readiness with qualified legal, privacy and sector specialists.
Requirements
- Senior leadership experience in technology, data, operations or business transformation, proportionate to the scope of the role.
- Evidence of AI systems taken into production, with a clear account of the candidate's responsibility and measured results.
- Experience with governance, security, data constraints and production operating costs.
- Ability to make and explain investment tradeoffs to executives and the board.
- Experience leading teams and budgets across functions, not only building demonstrations.
Set experience and qualification requirements from the job's actual needs. A degree or certificate is not a substitute for evidence of relevant delivery and leadership.
Which KPIs should a Chief AI Officer own?
| Measure | How to define it | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Value realized | Financial or operational change against an agreed baseline | Counting hypothetical time savings as cash |
| Production delivery | Useful systems released with owners and support | Rewarding pilot count alone |
| Operating cost | Total cost per successful task or workflow | Ignoring review, errors and maintenance |
| Governance coverage | Systems with current owners, risk reviews and required evidence | Treating document count as effectiveness |
| Adoption | Use of approved workflows by intended teams | Equating logins with business impact |
| Risk response | Timely action on material incidents and overdue controls | Incentives to hide incidents |
What salary should the employer budget?
Use dated, local compensation evidence matched to the role. Separate base pay, bonus, equity, benefits and search costs. Published estimates are not a salary survey run by Paul.
- Orbyt's September 2026 page gives a USD 310,000 US base estimate, with a USD 230,000–400,000 range. It explicitly describes these as computed estimates, not observed wages.
- KORE1's guide, updated 6 August 2026, gives a USD 280,000–400,000 base range for its mid-market category. This is a recruiter's guide, not an independently audited market median.
The populations and methods differ. Do not average the numbers into a new benchmark. Read the Chief AI Officer role guide for the wider mandate and pay context.
How to test a candidate's fit
- Ask for one investment decision they changed after examining the evidence.
- Review a production system, its baseline, operating cost and support model.
- Ask how they handled a risk exception, incident or unsuccessful project.
- Check how authority was shared with the CIO, CTO, CDO, security and legal teams.
- Verify references for a similar company size, complexity and mandate.
Use a realistic discussion exercise. Do not ask candidates to disclose a former employer's confidential data or provide unpaid production work.
Full-time CAIO or fractional leadership?
A full-time role can fit a large permanent portfolio that needs daily executive ownership and team leadership. Fractional leadership can fit a defined part-time mandate with an internal team able to execute between sessions.
Paul Okhrem's fractional CAIO service is USD 30,000 per month with a six-month minimum, up to 30 hours per month. It is not a full-time employee replacement. See commercial terms and the AI leadership roles comparison.
Questions about chief ai officer job description: an editable template
Who should a Chief AI Officer report to?
The reporting line should match the mandate. This template uses the CEO for a company-wide investment and governance role. A narrower delivery role may sit under another executive.
Is this page advertising a job vacancy?
No. It is a reusable hiring template. It does not describe an open role or accept job applications.
Does a CAIO need to be the best hands-on AI engineer?
Not necessarily. The role needs enough technical depth to challenge decisions, alongside budget, governance and leadership ability. Match hands-on requirements to the actual mandate.
