When McKinsey says 88% and Eurostat says 20%, neither is wrong. They are measuring different layers of the same stack.

Most "AI adoption statistics" articles fail because they treat adoption as a single number. It is not. The honest taxonomy looks like this:

How ranges were created. Where two primary sources reported significantly different numbers for the same concept, the article presents both numbers and explains the definitional difference. Where sources reported overlapping but differently scoped numbers, bands were synthesized from the data and labeled as such.

Why adoption numbers vary. The largest definitional differences are: (1) "use of AI in at least one business function" (McKinsey) vs. "production use of an AI technology" (Eurostat); (2) generative AI specifically vs. AI broadly; (3) employee-level use vs. organization-level deployment; (4) survey self-report vs. observed use.

How "enterprise AI adoption" is defined in this report. Organizations with 10 or more employees using AI in at least one business function, with sub-categorizations for production use, embedded use, and scaled use as defined in the "What counts as enterprise AI adoption?" section.

Limitations. This is a synthesis report, not a primary survey. Numbers presented as Paul Okhrem analysis or editorial estimate are explicitly labeled. Source publication dates range from July 2024 to April 2026; the bulk of sources are from August 2025 to March 2026. Treat sub-categorical adoption rates as directional rather than precise.
